Strattice™ for Breast Reconstruction

Strattice™ is an important breakthrough in surgical science that provides excellent support for breast tissue as well as implants and reduces the chances of capsular contracture. At the same time, it encourages tissue regrowth during the recovery process following breast reconstruction procedures. What is Strattice™?

Strattice™ Reconstructive Tissue Matrix (RTM) is a sterile, structurally intact, reconstructive tissue matrix made from porcine skin tissue. Strattice is often referred to as a type of “internal bra,” which holds tissue in place and firmly keeps the implant in place, incorporating itself into a patient’s body tissue in roughly 24 months. As a matrix comprised of the patient’s tissue, it provides a foundation that allows cells to grow inward as breast tissue heals, preventing capsular contracture. It may also be used to provide coverage for the implant to compensate for any lack of breast tissue.

When Does Dr. J Use Strattice™ RTM?

Strattice™ is used in the majority of Dr. J’s breast reconstruction patients. The exceptions are women who may have difficulties with its components. Specifically, some patients may have allergies or may wish not to use the porcine-derived material in the tissue matrix for religious or ethical reasons. A very small number of patients may also be allergic to Polysorbate 20, a commonly used emulsifier in skin products and medicines. At an initial consultation, Dr. J will discuss the available options and make sure the patient understands all aspects of the procedure, including the materials used and the benefits and risks associated with them.
